Convert MKV to MP4
OBS records to MKV by default because the file survives a crash. Editors, phones and chat apps prefer MP4. FeatherCut converts one to the other in your browser.

Tips
OBS recordings and MKV
- An OBS recording in H.264 up to 1080p at a moderate bitrate is just repackaged into MP4. It takes seconds and changes not a single pixel.
- OBS also has its own remux option in the File menu. If OBS is at hand, that works just as well. FeatherCut helps when you are on another computer or want a smaller file right away.
- High-bitrate, 1440p or 4K recordings are re-encoded to 1080p so the file is easy to share and edit.
- Audio tracks: the MP4 keeps one main audio track.

FAQ
Common questions
Why does OBS record to MKV?
An MKV file can still be read after a sudden crash. An MP4 cut off mid-recording is often unrecoverable.
Does YouTube accept MKV?
Yes, but Discord, WhatsApp, phones and many editors handle it worse. MP4 works everywhere.
What about multiple OBS audio tracks?
The MP4 keeps one main track. If you need separate tracks for editing, keep the original MKV.
